Just added Knoxx Blackhawk SpecOp Absorbing Stock to Remington 870

3 Attachment(s)
This is my deer hunting slug gun.....in the lower part of Mich we cannot use rifles......the next best thing is a rifled barrel shotgun.

I shoot Remington Buckhammer Slugs....and man are they powerful...massive recoil.....has recoil energy greater than .416 Rem but not as much as the .458 Win Mag....both the most powerful African Game cartridges made by Rem and Win.

I wanted this Knoxx SpecOp stock for 3 reasons.....A) Tame Some Recoil.....B) Adjustable Length of Pull = I need a little less L.O.P. as my forearms are a bit shorter that standard shotgun...and it really gets bad as I add layers of hunting clothes. C) I like pistol grips / thumbhole stocks for precision shots.....yes, the "Buckhammers" + the Hastings Paradox Rifled Cantilevered Scope Barrel is capable of 2 inch groups at 100 yards - it makes the shotgun a .72 Cal Rifle.

I purchased the Knoxx Stock and Forearm set off of Ebay for $114 delivered...a pretty good price.

The build quality of the stock is outstanding. I just put it together tonight...have not tested it yet.

When my wife saw it, she asked if the Deer had assult weapons and would be fighting back this fall!!!!

It does look pretty badass....and points great.....I can't wait for gun season.

One more thing.....I was skeptical of the cheek hold point on the stock....and it is perfect....the really designed it well...if anything, it is a bit low = I have the not lock down so hard even with standard scope rings and a fairly small scope objective. This stock is very nice with iron sights and also perfect with a plain vent rib bead sight.....you could easily bird hunt with it.

Very nice set up! I like the scope and mount too!
I'm sure you have others thinking of doing the same.

Other details:

Here are some "Buckhammer" ballistic numbers I ran.....I sight in at the range for 100 yards zero.

546 gr., .16 B.C.
Range (yards) Muzzle 25 50 75 100 150 200
Velocity (fps) 1550 1455 1367 1286 1214 1100 1018
Energy (ft.-lb.)2913 2566 2264 2005 1788 1468 1258
Trajectory -2.0 0.2 1.3 1.3 0.0 -7.2 -21.6

If you sight in @ 25 yard .2 inches high you should be zeroed @ 100 yards.

The scope is a $75 Bushnell Banner 32mm Objective 1.5X - 4.5X Variable.....so, even at 4.5X the exit pupil is over 7 mm = maximum low light pupil dialation that even very young eyes can achieve....so it is quite bright. Also, it has a massive 6 inches of eye relief = needed for big recoil.

Standard height rings....Aluminum Rings.....never a problem even with the big recoil.....they are Luepold rings.

Looks nice! In Ohio you can only use shotguns/muzzleloaders for deer hunting...now that I've moved to AZ everyone I tell that to looks at me like I'm crazy and I've been asked "what do you shoot them with? BUCKshot?" then I have to explain the whole slug thing (and most don't even know rifled barrels exist!!)

It looks great though! I always chose to use a muzzleloader instead of the shotgun, but I know plenty of people that have killed big deer with a shotgun!

Looks awesome, I wanna hear a range report!

Been trying to score one off ebay last 3 nights but some mfer always seems to sneak in at the last second for around $94....looking at sellers feedback I see them sell in the 80's frequently so I'll be patient.

I assume it's adustable - how is the fit between it and the receiver?

Any tips on the SpecOps Stock install? -- I have one sitting the safe, but have not installed it yet.

2 years ago I shot a very big 8 point at 100 yards.....this gun but Remington synthetic stock at the time......nearly straight on front shot.....broke his collar bone and shoulder and went sreaight through his heart and stuck in lower rib cage.......72 Cal soft lead Buckhammer expanded to .92 inch and had 100% weight retention. I could stick my thumbs through the hole in the heart. He made one bound and piled up and did not move.

I'm a big fan of the Buckhammers....if you can stand the recoil and restrict shots to 150 yards. Hornady has a SST ballistic tip that can turn your shotgun into a 200 yard gun....but the projectile weight drops to 250 grain and 45 cal.....still a big bullet....but not the 546grains = 1.25 oz .72 cal Buckhammer......I'll just have to live with 150 yards limits....but the Hornady sabots are pretty cool.

ruprick -

What is the model number of your scope?

Guns looks great - props

I bought a synthetic 870 XP in 94 for $199.0 - just now starting to trick it out

For Rem 870:

The Knoxx Stock should have directions....

A) Medium philips #2 into rubber recoil pad....remove 2 screws.
B) Large regular screw driver to remove main stock screw.
C) Remove small metal spacer where factory stock was on receiver....this stamped metal spacer just falls out.
D) Remove adj. stock end from Knoxx stock by pulling down on adj lever
E) Install Knoxx Stock using supplier ball end allen wrench....careful not to cross thread.

Do you need to replace the front forearm on the pump?

The fit to the gun is awesone.

I was having same Ebay problems so I just started looking for the buy-it-nows...paid a little more but got it locked in....still only $114 with forearm delivered.

Yes - fully adjustable....I think it has 4 positions. The shortest would fit a small kid.....or is great for tatical carry...the pistol grip is very nice.

The Knoxx stock does fit fairly tight around the trigger group and the safety...because of the pistol grip it does take up some of the real estate at the back of the trigger guard....so the safety button is right at edge of grip. Still very functional and no issue...just different that a factory stock.

This Youtube will show you how to get the slide off the gun....also on the re-assembly.....must depress the right shell stop first push a little then the left stop......exactly the way the video shows. Just skip all the trigger group stuff in the video....

Once you have the slide off.....there is a nut that looks like a piece of internal threaded tubing at the front inside of the slide.....there are only 2 notches in the front of the nut....I had a very thin pair of pliers - nearly like thick sheet metal that I spread and used as a spanner to turn out the nut....improvise....use 2 screwdrivers or make a special tool out of a piece of metal....whatever...just get the nut off......once the nut is off - slide off old forearm.....slide on new.....replace nut......

Put back together as per video.

Nice addition to the Remy. Just watch out when looking thru the scope. It will move back from the recoil the distance between the back of the receiver and the stock in pic 2.

Yes - very good point! The shock absorbing feature will eat up some of that eye relief.

Along with the tip on the scope moving toward your eye under recoil, be careful with your cheek weld. Before you shoot it, look at where the stock moves and where your cheek would be. Placing your cheek in this area looks as though it might leave you with a nice story to tell for the next few days. Along with the stock, I invested in the Power Pak too:

My intentions were not primarly for hunting, so I purchased the unit with the "sidesaddle" option. If you do not have the need for the extra rounds at your fingertips and don't think that you need the adjustability of other than the medium hieght, they also make a unit that is less expensive that will also help with a safe cheek weld.

I have one of these on my 870P that rides in my vehicle. There are only a few things on installation that you need to watch.

1) Some stocks use a spacer between the receiver and the stock. If your old stock has a spacer, it needs to be removed; otherwise, the Knoxx will not seat properly.

2) Make sure you have the right LONG hex wrench to tighten the Knoxx into place. It needs to be fully snugged down, and there should be no visible gap between the receiver and the stock.

3) If you have an aftermarket crossbolt safety, be sure the Knoxx does not hit it under recoil. I run the standard safety, so this was not an issue for me.

I just picked up the very same kit on ebay a few weeks ago. My Mossy 500 based Mariner JIC with pistol grip only and an agressive foregrip was brutal on the hands and wrists when firing slugs or heavy 00 buck loads. Not to mention the slow followup shots and muzzle rise.

The difference with the new stock is very noticable. I'm very pleased with the fit, finish, function and ease of installation.
